Irving Penn

Irving seems to make use of using a balanced combination of simplicity and emotions in his photos. Most of his images seem to have few props and blank backgrounds. He is able to portray an idea through the use of simple body language of his subjects. Using these ways of taking photos, he is able to also create some very powerful fashion images. Almost all of his images use a blank background, though some are just flat, where others are used to create a certain space( this image creates a cramped space).

I enjoy this piece very much, it may not be one of his more fashion-oriented pieces but it seems to give off a strong idea. With his use of the blank corner for his image, he creates a cramped feeling, like the subject is closed in. Having the subject pose with a cigarette and in a slightly slumped position, it shows a stressed image since the subject looks cramped and is smoking(mostly used due to stress).

Some might not like his images due to how simply they all look. They seem like he just threw someone in front of a wall and took a picture. Though, if you look harder these simple images can create a feeling that is being portrayed. This skill would help in fashion since each outfit itself is suppose to create a certain feeling for the person wearing it.
